STORY
▼EP2:The Trail of Adam Blaze
His day job at the time was as a mage and psychoanalyst.
He was an elite bureaucrat in Central who was skilled in his own unique magic of manipulating the mind. (He was not a member of the military.)
“I want to go back to Central…”
(*whining at the time of dispatch to the Grand Chariot)
At the behest of Null, a commanding female general who held authority over him, he finds himself reluctantly dispatched to the elaborate research facility known as "Falsedad Cor." Situated in the northern reaches of Grand Chariot, this facility is home to the brilliant scientist Lilith Maiya, whose reputation precedes her.
As a result, he is involved in Lilith's outrageous "Astral Flare Consumption Reduction Plan,"which calls for "a new type of craft with a heart no different from a human being.”
He supports her philosophy in thinking that "giving reason to machines is the best way to save the planet and them" and has been supporting her with devotion. Believing that she would be able to accomplish it.
“Lilith, you are disgusting.”
(*When he decided to leave the Grand Chariot)
As Lilith's disease progresses, she gradually loses her ability to make normal decisions.
She is so devoted to research with no chance of succeeding, without paying attention to the time limit of her own impending death.
Adam bears the rare honor of being hailed as the "Hero of Central." Remarkably, at a mere 15 years of age, he orchestrated a ceasefire in the protracted conflict between Central and the eastern resistance in Aldebaran.
In his quest for formidable magical powers, he ventures into the abyss known as "Eden," nestled at the deepest recesses of Central.
Despite being strictly forbidden by the will of Central's founder, Levia Lyne, to make contact with Eden, regarded as a mythical artifact among the royal descendants, he defies this decree.
Amidst the "white garden of death," he discovers the presence of a vivid crimson hue—an anomaly amidst the desolation. Here, the "astral flare," a source of magical energy, surges forth relentlessly. At the heart of the "Fountain of Wisdom of Good and Evil," the legendary "bonfire" ignites, casting an ethereal glow. Encircled by the gentle embrace of the "green smoke," emitting a mesmerizing light, he stands as the sole witness to this surreal spectacle.
The gardenia flower, traditionally a harbinger of death, has long instilled fear in the hearts of people, serving as a formidable barrier to reaching the bonfire. This unveils the true nature of Eden—an enigmatic deity of nothingness residing within Central.
Through communion with this divine power, Adam becomes imbued with the essence of the "Bonfire." However, this blessing renders him acutely susceptible to the mental ravages wrought by the depletion of astral flare, amidst a world ravaged by the relentless spread of the "Terminal Disease." Undeterred, he remains steadfast in his pursuit of truth, maintaining a realistic perspective until the very end.
He was frightened. He was afraid that he would be the only one with a "normal mind" who would survive to the end. The news of his beloved Lilith's "terminal disease" made the "hero of salvation" weak.
― “I don't want to lose Eve.” ―
It did not take him long to realize this.
He took his beloved daughter away from the research facility in the northern region, and decided to give priority to the "Kagaribito Destruction Project," a plan that would ensure the survival of the human race. He returns to Central, leaving his wife behind in tears…
“We can't make it in time, mom and dad's research....
If Kagaribito are not destroyed now, humanity will perish. This is certain.”
"...Will mommy survive if I help you, daddy?"
“If only her heart could be healed by returning Astral Flare or the stars…
Dad is not a doctor, so I can't make any guarantees.
But I'll do my best to help Mom.
There are many excellent military doctors in Central, along with Null.
If we all work together, I'm sure we can find a solution.
So, Eve... please, will you come with me?
“Uh...yeah. I'll go with you. Eve, I'm going to say goodbye to everyone.”
(*Adam's conversation with his daughter, Eve, when he decided to leave Lilith.
“Everyone" refers to the old Kagaribito, who has been a great help.
Eve knows that they will not respond when she says goodbye, since they have only a "pseudo-spirit").
Upon his departure with Eve, he took the "bonfire," a safety mechanism that was scheduled to be used for "VIRGO," a special new type of machine that was supposed to be the key component of the "pseudo-spirit system," out of the facility.
The system, made by his magical technology using "wisdom of good and evil," is used to link Kagaribito's "heart" and keep them under control.
But for the mechanical dolls, it could also be a suicidal system. Everything depends on the will of the person who handles the bonfire. However, without fulfilling his purpose and shortly after his return to Central, he passed away quietly, cared for by his beloved daughter.
「Few people know that the price for being exposed to the "Garden of Life and Death" is "half their life.” The truth was hidden from the public, and Central was plunged into a state of panic after the "destruction of the old" cut off the possibility of human survival…but that is another story.
“Why now of all times?
You are always so kind and cruel. Eden…”
(*Adam's soliloquy when he realized that his life span was near end. He thought that Eden, like the gods of the various regions, had become a summoned beast, so this line is based on the assumption that communication is possible.)
“Eve, please hear my last wish. Live. Destroy your mom’s sins."
(*As per Adam's will ➔ Eve paragraph, which entrusts the wisdom of Eden to his daughter, she does not accept it.)
It is said that on the verge of death, he entrusted all the wisdom he knew to his daughter.
“Please destroy all the old machines and survive,'' he begged her.
Thus, the Bonfire was passed on to his daughter Eve, who herself was entrusted with the painful role of destroying the “Mechanic”.
His regret was immeasurable, because it was her who he should have wanted to protect more than anyone else.
At the same time, the peace of being able to die first that spread within Adam, also made him suffer until the end. He was not able to leave his daughter.
He was born in the tropical lands of Fomalhaut, within the Blaze territory. As the second son of Joseph Blaze, a prosperous jeweler, he was perpetually overshadowed by his elder brother, who harbored resentment towards Adam's exceptional skills as both a craftsman and a merchant.
Manipulated by his brother's machinations, Adam found himself exiled to Central at the tender age of 12, fleeing from the looming threat of assassination. Desperate for a semblance of power, he sought after the formidable abilities of the "bonfire," even at the cost of risking his own life.
In Lilith and Eve, he found symbols of the "happiness" he yearned for, a love that had long eluded him within the confines of his fractured family.
